We are pleased to announce the release of the first volume of the new publishing series “Figure for Survival”, in which we will juxtapose the art and person of Edward Dwurnik with other creators of culture. The series will be opened by the outstanding Ukrainian prose writer and poet Yuri Andrukhovych (born 1960). His story “Leśny / Лісун / Woodsman”, a childhood memory of an unknown narrator, is shrouded in an aura of mystery. Just like him, we do not know who the night guest of grandma Iza is. His figure, although so real, blurs in the thick darkness of the night, in the heavy smell of the forest, in the hot cloud of wild rose infusion. Similarly, the silhouettes of people in the paintings by Edward Dwurnik present in the book – dynamically painted with a wide brush. The features of their faces – like the face of the hero of Andrukhovych’s story – blur, but their presence arouses anxiety and sharpens the eyesight. We sense that something bigger and more serious is at stake here. Something that is being kept silent.

The book is in three languages - the Ukrainian original is accompanied by a Polish translation by Jerzy Czech and an English translation by Vitaly Chernetsky. The publication was designed by Nicola Cholewa and refers to two iconic post-war publishing series: “Nike” and “Głowa Wawelska” (Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza “Czytelnik”).

The intention of the series’ creator, Pola Dwurnik, is to expand and enrich the reception of her father’s work with new contexts and interpretations.

The covers of subsequent volumes will feature the title “Figura for survival” – a silhouette of a man standing on his hands with legs straight out in front, drawn by Edward Dwurnik. The artist created several hundred “Figures for Survival” – on paper and canvas – and during his lifetime, this characteristic pose became a recognizable “Dwurnik” motif.
